Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about joining, participating in, and supporting Shen Rowing.
-
Who can join Shen Rowing?
Shen Rowing welcomes students interested in learning and competing in rowing. We offer programs for middle school (Modified) and high school athletes, with opportunities for both beginners and experienced rowers.
Does my child need previous rowing experience?
Not at all! Many athletes join without any prior experience. Our coaches help new rowers learn the fundamentals, develop confidence, and build skills throughout the season.
What is the difference between Modified and High School rowing?
Modified rowing introduces younger athletes to the sport, focusing on fundamentals, teamwork, and skill development. The High School program builds on those skills with more advanced training and competitive racing opportunities.
When does rowing season take place?
Shen Rowing offers fall, winter, spring, and summer programming. Fall and spring are our primary on-water competitive seasons, while winter focuses on conditioning and training. Summer programming includes opportunities to learn and develop rowing skills.
How do I register my child?
Registration details, program availability, fees, and deadlines are shared on our website before each season. Visit our Programs page for current information.
Can my child try rowing before committing?
Our summer Learn to Row program is a great way for students to experience rowing before joining a competitive team.
We also offer a free two week trial for interested athletes.

Where are practices held?
On-water practices take place at our boathouse on the Mohawk River, while winter and indoor training locations vary by season. Specific locations and schedules are communicated before each season.
How often are practices?
Practice frequency varies by program and season. Rowing is a team sport, and consistent attendance is important because each athlete plays a role in the boat's success.
What should my child wear and bring to practice?
Athletes should wear comfortable athletic clothing suitable for the weather, athletic shoes, and bring a refillable plastic water bottle. Team-specific clothing guidance will be provided by coaches.
Does my child need to purchase equipment?
Shen Rowing provides boats, oars, and other necessary rowing equipment. Families are responsible for appropriate athletic clothing and personal items.
How do athletes get to practice?
Families are responsible for arranging transportation unless otherwise communicated. Carpooling is encouraged, and families often coordinate transportation through Band.
What happens when there is bad weather?
Coaches evaluate weather and water conditions and determine whether practices will proceed, move indoors, or be canceled. Updates are communicated through Band.
-
What is a regatta?
A regatta is a rowing competition where crews race against other clubs and schools. Events may take place locally or require travel throughout the Northeast.
Does every athlete participate in regattas?
Race participation depends on the program, event requirements, athlete readiness, and coaching decisions. Coaches determine lineups based on the needs of the team and the competition.
Are parents expected to attend regattas?
Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend! Regattas are a great way to support athletes and connect with other families. Some events also require parent volunteers.
How does transportation to regattas work?
Transportation arrangements vary by event and may include team buses or family transportation. Details are communicated in advance.
What should parents bring to a regatta?
Regattas are often outdoor, all-day events. We recommend comfortable shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, chairs, snacks, water, and sunscreen. Families should be prepared for changing schedules and weather conditions.
How are race lineups and boat assignments determined?
Coaches determine lineups based on a variety of factors, including skill development, attendance, team needs, and competitive readiness. Assignments may change throughout the season.
-
What do program fees cover?
Program fees help support coaching, equipment, boathouse operations, insurance, regatta participation, and other costs associated with operating the club. Specific inclusions and any additional costs are outlined during registration.
Is financial assistance available?
Shen Rowing is committed to making rowing accessible to families. Families experiencing financial hardship are encouraged to apply for our Scholarship program.
Are families required to participate in fundraising?

There are many ways to get involved, including regatta support, fundraising, communications, travel coordination, special events, and club committees. Every contribution helps strengthen the program.
Can parents join a committee or the Board?
